How many people discovered this because they were submitting a deviation, saw the thumbnail of this appear on the submission screen, right clicked the thumb to get the name and pasted that + deviantART into a search? Anyone?

Oh, I actually have the same thing happening when I submit ^^. I guess you wanted to submit into the comic category?
There always pop up examples from the category you're submitting in. It's new... I guess O_o
And no idea why this one was displayed in your case. Maybe it's a fav/views/comments thing (would be a wild guess)?

I think they only allow things that are extremely popular to show that way though. Gotta ensure quality examples...

If they want quality examples they'd better choose something else. I think it's so often viewed because you can legally laugh your ass off. Do that to a human and everybody is like "omg, you're a meanie". With cats everything seems more legit.

Funny not many people see the animation. actually the cat's eyes blink as well.

I am senior member. You get that by... I haven o idea. I tested muro, some other got it by being very active in the community and some of the hyped half-gods probably by sheer existence. There should be an an entry about becoming senior somewhere in the staff-journals (subtitle: you should search for it if you're really curious).

Sometimes people don't see the blinking animation in my avatar because I occasionally switch it out to the non-blinking version!

And that's definitely why people anthropomorphize animal and use them instead of people. Viewers react in a totally different way when they see people doing things than when they see animals doing them in people's places.

Over 8 1/2 years?! Wow! Don't they have a special Badge for people who've been on dA as long as you?

Hehe... Also, since I was thinking about that and how a lot of people are so young they haven't even been on the internet for 8 years... But not you! I'm used to being worried that I'm too old for everyone, so I was not surprised to find out I was older than you. I was surprised to find out I'm only older by 51 weeks! Not 51 pairs of months!
Yay! Someone else who isn't 17!

And who said your art isn't a quality example? It's looks quality to me!

And with cats, everything doesn't seem more legit. With cats, everything IS more legit!

Yeah, that's exactly how I feel when I am attending a convention. Normally some kid around 14 is standing in front of me and I think "Oh wow, if I started young you could be mine". I don't feel old in that moment but mostly it's amusing. One kid wore a Captain Future T-shirt and I was like "Omg, I saw that when I was young!" and she couldn't believe it because for her that vintage and "so 90s".
There are a lot people being here a LOT longer. A lot of friends and artists started on GFX and when a shitstorm went on there many people "migrated" to Deviantart. So actually the art community is a lot older. We're living dinos. Somehow.
The thing is: You grow older with the net. And here are so many people hitting their 30s and 40s and even if you think "I'm old"- no, you're not. I won't go back to awkward teenage age. Hell, being older is so much better.
