Some people asked me how the illustrations are done for my books. The three images show the original sketches of three double pages which are in my second Kulla book. Normally I stick very close to the sketches although on canvas it´s kinda hard to hit the right colors (especially evening colors are a pain in the ass).
The right side is "plain" because the text will be on that page. Normally I test the canvas "page" with a dummy text foil.
The original text gets split into pages and after that I do the sketches. I have a layout which I print out (including name and page-numbers). On those I sketch with pencil and scan everything for the rough coloration in photoshop. Those colored sketches get printed out again (yes... i know it´s odd) and discussed with my editor. If some sketches don´t work I have to redo the whole process until the final sketches get an okay.
One illustration (the last one) is that one (only the left part): [link]
Thank you so much for sharing how you do the Art and the book I guess its like a story board plan, rough outline of how its all going to work, then the hard detail work begins.
Your art is always so lovely thought, even the drafts look great
That's a lot of work...but really worth it ^^ Thanks for sharing the process--I'm very interested in illustrating children's books (although my style is far from right for it at the moment xD) So it's great to hear about how things work ^^
Nice... I really like the way you started to color them... It's interesting to see the process of how you make your books... You really have a very fluid and nice way of painting and blending colors, I suppose someone who can paint traditionally so well has a different approach to digital media that someone who doesn't have that kind of background... Good luck!!! hope you make your deadline!!!
Thank you for sharing this with us! I love your work and I find it very interesting to see and hear how your books come together. Unfortunately I didn't manage to go to Germany over Christmas, but definitely will do over summer to hopefully find your Kulla books in a bookshop .
