Some thoughts after 5 month Z-day

I won't babble along about the Z-case (if you want to know what I mean, check 14th May entry). Fact is that we're on court now. This means we got far but it also means you have to breath slowly and be patient (and have a lot of money) to get your right.

Because I saw the bills and I saw the habit of lawyers shoving complaints aggressivly around, sending hundreds of faxes and mails to stretch the process as long as possible till the artist gives up some hints:
- try to get an agency that takes care of your image rights:
this means that up from a certain professional state you should consider that an agency can write bills, check contracts and take care of legal issues. Please keep in mind to check the agency contract first (maybe even with a lawyer since some implement quite funny paragraphs). Many offer legal protection and taking care of those problems BUT want payment from you. There are enough agencies out there who cover that themselves which is called - in my opinion- service we get for the X % they get with every license.
For those who think: cool, I'll do it! It only makes sense if you have a lot of requests anyway and *see* that people are interested in your work. You won't last too long if the agency cannot sell your artwork and that depends on quality and professional behaviour from your side.
- i can't stress enough how much a watermark can mean:
The image gets trackable (where did they get it? Blog, Dev, other communities?). I know some criticial guys think that a watermark uglifies an image and some even think only very very few pros should do it. Bullshit. Do whatever you want. Keep it decently transparent and don't make it too big. The normal viewer should be able to see the image properly and thieves should -on the other side- have hell of work to retouch it.
Why watermark if you can retouch? Simply because it means WORK. Stealing means getting money for zero work. If a watermark makes it less attractive: Go for it.

People will rip art off anyway. Sure. But you can take care of everything as good as possible to make the chance a bit smaller.

Anne *cross your fingers for me... :) *

Oh... if anybody wonders why the Hippo-prints are down- Z-case means I have to till the whole thing is over.

The local "Z-Case store" seemed nervous and recently had several staff checkin' through their stock... wonder if it has anythin to do with legal matters...
